I have always thought that learning the art of the language of sound (that's how music is defined) is a path full of “surprises” that make it engaging and exciting. The most important in my learning process was the encounter with the elegance and immediacy of the language of jazz.
From the beginning my artistic activity has been inspired by the fascination emanating from the practice of improvisation, which allows me to express myself in a personal and extraordinarily free and creative way. I thought to share my forty years of experience through Patreon for those who are approaching the language of Jazz or those who, already ahead in their studies, wish to deepen their knowledge of the language of jazz.
The beginning of my teaching experience dates back to the early eighties, when I learned drum and piano lessons, first at home and later in some private schools, where I also started to try my hand at teaching ensemble music for jazz combos. It is right to point out that I am talking about a period and a city, Florence, where a high level teaching structure did not yet exist in jazz. So there was a lot to do, to invent and build. It went that, with youth on the one hand, love for music and good will on the other, with the collaboration of other musicians I was able to create in a few years a real school of jazz with a real curriculum articulated between instrument lessons, theory, harmony, ensemble music and big band practice. From 1986 until today I have tirelessly worked, through teaching and producing groups and concerts, so that anyone wishing to study and play jazz could do so in the best possible way. Today I could make a very long list of musicians, some of them also very well known as Stefano Bollani, who I saw growing up in the music school of the Centro Attività Musicali (CAM). At such a difficult time like this, what I feel useful to do is to create an opportunity for learning and growth in music and jazz culture that gives those who do not have sufficient financial means or work commitments that do not allow them to attend school courses. So I thought that using the Patreon platform could be the right way to support my commitment and an adequate vehicle to promote structured jazz courses with live online lessons. Very often one of the causes that lead a student, whether young or adult, to leave his or her musical studies is the difficulty of identifying an educational process that will lead him or her to recognize his or her mistakes and the progress that will lead him or her to reach the closest goal. In a nutshell, to manage his path. One of the things I have done in the last four years has been to collect the documentation of the didactic material, consisting of scores, collections of exercises, harmony notes, etc., composed for the students of the school during its forty years of activity. I did this work in order to “pack” a method of study based on a material that, having been created specifically for the students who attended the school, is in fact already tested and, given the growth of many students, also guaranteed. The courses that I propose based mainly on learning the improvisation technique, require a gradual assimilation of theoretical-harmonic concepts. For this purpose, in addition to the periodic delivery of the exercises, I will also provide the student with an exhaustive treatise on jazz harmony created by me in parallel with the collection of exercises to be performed with the instrument. In this way, the management of the route I was talking about earlier will also be properly prepared and taken care of. This point is crucial for me to keep the relationship between our ambitions and our passions consistent and what we do to keep them alive. As one of my masters used to say, “playing is good but playing well is much better. Especially to the listener.”
